Handmade Gifts from the Garden

Handmade Salves and Balms

Every year for the last decade, I have selected and saved calendula seeds from my garden.  Each year I select for the fastest blooming, sap heavy blooms to make oil infusions with.  I harvest and start drying flowers to put into olive oil as early as I can.  I follow the traditional method of solarizing my infusions.  The cycle of a warm days to cold nights makes for an exceptionally strong infusion once the dried flowers are added to the olive oil.  I let them steep for a month or so out in the garden until the oil is a rich golden yellow.   I use these oils as the basis for the herbal salves I offer.

Each salve is made in small batches, usually two a season, so plan to stop by and try some if you're at Brighton Market.  I make infusions with calendula, plantain, and lemongrass.

Lena de las Flores on Instagram: "The last of the calendula is ready to dry and go into oil. My first batch from last month is just finishing in the sun. The hot days and cool nights of September are perfect for making extracts. This infused evoo will go into my lip balm and healing salves. The scarlet runner beans are dry enough to harvest and put up for next year. They grew beautifully up the pergola and kept the hummingbirds here all summer. They are the fattest, prettiest bean I've ever seen. Starting to work on dried flower wreaths for fall. This one needs some work but I'm so happy with how the bupleurum dried. Just the perfect minty green to go with the hydrangeas. Love it. The Boom Boom white dahlias are still pumping out blooms and now they pair so well with the blooms from my Seven Sons trees. The Sweet Autumn Clematis is about to burst. I'll show you when it does. Much love. Happy Sunday. Happy warm fall days. ❤️ XOXO e #puremichigan #slowflowers #summervibes #cutflowerfarm #excessivelydivertedbyflowers #annarbor #wayfarerflowers #fallvibes"wayfarer.flowers on September 15, 2024: "The last of the calendula is ready to dry and go into oil.
